Cryptogram Helper
Type in the cryptogram from your newspaper. Try a letter and see it fill in everywhere. The helper suggests where to look next, but you do the solving.
Where to start a cryptogram
- One-letter words are almost always A or I.
- Apostrophes: a single letter after one is usually S or T (IT'S, DON'T); two letters are often LL, RE or VE.
- Three-letter words that repeat are often THE or AND.
- The most common letter in a long quote is usually E, then T, A and O.
- Patterns: a word like XYZX with the first letter repeated at the end is often THAT.
- No letter ever stands for itself, and each letter always stands for the same one.
